From Swimming to Walking: Examples of How Biology is helping us Design Better Machines

چکیده
Three biomimetic machines are presented: an external knee prosthesis, a bipedal robot, and a robotic fish. Here we demonstrate how models of biological movement and actuators that perform like muscle can enhance machine stability, efficiency and dynamic cosmesis. Ideas addressed in the paper include the use of muscle tissue for machine actuation, and how biological models can serve as virtual control elements for the stabilization of bipedal walking machines.

Welcome to virosphere
Viruses may seem alien, but they are the most abundant and, arguably, the most important organisms on Earth. They are found just about everywhere, from oceans and forests to the people around you and, of course, in and on you as well. This world of strange, quasi-living things has been dubbed the virosphere, and it is a mysterious one – we know less about viruses than any other life form. But t...
متن کاملLimb bone loading in swimming turtles: changes in loading facilitate transitions from tubular to flipper-shaped limbs during aquatic invasions.
Members of several terrestrial vertebrate lineages have returned to nearly exclusive use of aquatic habitats. These transitions were often accompanied by changes in skeletal morphology, such as flattening of limb bone shafts. Such morphological changes might be correlated with the exposure of limb bones to altered loading. Though the environmental forces acting on the skeleton differ substantia...
متن کاملForelimb kinematics and motor patterns of the slider turtle (Trachemys scripta) during swimming and walking: shared and novel strategies for meeting locomotor demands of water and land.
Turtles use their limbs during both aquatic and terrestrial locomotion, but water and land impose dramatically different physical requirements. How must musculoskeletal function be adjusted to produce locomotion through such physically disparate habitats? We addressed this question by quantifying forelimb kinematics and muscle activity during aquatic and terrestrial locomotion in a generalized ...
متن کاملInner Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine Optimization for HEV Traction Drive Application in Order to Achieve Maximum Torque per Ampere
Recently, Inner permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous machines have been introduced as a possible traction motor in hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and traction applications due to their unique merits. In order to achieve maximum torque per ampere (MTPA), optimization of the motor geometry parameters is necessary. This paper Presents a design method to achieve minimum volume, MTPA and minimum ...
متن کاملReproductive biology of swimming crab, Charybdis hellerii (A. Milne-Edwards, 1867) in coastal waters of the Persian Gulf (Hormuzgan province)
This study was conducted to determine some aspects of reproductive biology of the Indo-Pacific swimming crab, Charybdis hellerii (A. Milne-Edwards, 1867) in coastal waters of the Persian Gulf (Hormozgan province) from June 2015 to May 2016. The results showed that the annual sex ratio is F: M=1:1.3, with 57.4 % males. All the five stages of ovarian development of C. hellerii were observed throu...
